On the 20th of January 2022, Lester Morse, Director of East Coast Recovery was invited to talk about addiction and the brain with the police’s wellbeing champions, who are representatives from various teams and departments.

Their purpose is to signpost and create wellbeing initiatives. Some trim practitioners were also invited to the talk as they deal with individuals who have experienced trauma in the workplace.

The talk which started as a reflection of Lester’s life as an alcoholic and then continuing on to talk about how the brain works and the effects on mental health. The aim of the brain talk is to simplify the understanding of what happens to someone’s brain in addiction, how we react and control our behaviours successfully as individuals either suffering with addiction and mental health or in contact with someone who may be suffering.

Several of the participants found the talk beneficial with one commenting:

“Good motto.... I like "If you do what you've always done ...you'll get what you always get" Thanks Lester”

Another participant said: “Thank you - really explained some concerns & challenges with my victims”

One of nurses who attended said: "In all my years of nursing (30 years or so) that’s the best, most incisive discussion I’ve experienced around addiction”

Both Mr Morse and the participants, agreed the importance of increasing addiction and the brain education for young people. They also spoke about methods in which to deal with more general feelings within themselves relating to mental health, whether that is on a personal level or with their victims.

The purpose of these talks is to educate and reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and the increase in people suffering with mental health. Mr Morse is extremely enthusiastic to continue to do these and understands the importance.

He said “we want to do more of these talks in schools and workplaces to help people understand the brain and reduce the stigma – the lack of understanding is shocking”
